Welcome to Miami!
- Monday 7 September 2009

Hiya. At last we are writing, and we have alot to tell. This is just picks and parts of everything we get to experience:

At the moment Maja is in the shower and i am sitting at Omars computer and thought id start writing a little about the days that has passed in Miami, and then Maja will take over when its my turn to wash off the beach. Theres alot going on all the time and it feels as if im walking around in a dream. Or living in a dream. Omars living vacuum cleaner is driving around sucking up all the cathair.

Last friday we came with Kathleen and the girls to a "Couchsurfing event" in a mexican restaurant. And here we met Omar, our new host, and moved all our bags to his car. We ate alot of nice mexican food in the company of about 20 couchsurfers from Miami. And then Omar brought us to a "New moon party" - something held only once a month, when there is a new moon, obviously, and is in short alot of people comming together on the sand of North Beach. People bring drums and other instruments and then theres music and dancing on the beach. There was also some guys performing with fire and we took a midnight dip in the warm water. It was totally cool until the police came and split up the party since youre not supposed to drink on the beach (or as Omar translated: Since noone is making money off of it).

And yesterday Omar first brought us for a healthy breakfast with smoothies and then to the Russian and Turkish saunas on the beach... about 10 different saunas feauturing different temperatures, aromas and lighting. There was one aromateraphy sauna which was absolutely amazing. The entire atmosphere was very relaxed except that me and Maja managed to loose our key no less than two times, haha. (Too much aromateraphy?/Maja) The second time was a bit more dramatic as a woman had taken our key for hers, and left with it. From the saunas it was possible to walk straight to the beach, so we took breaks from the saunas to lay in the water and peel ourselfs with the sand while a tropical rainstorm was brewing and lightning was breaking the sky.

The weather here in Florida is nuts, it can change in a minute. Last friday we had to stay in the car for 15 minutes because it was raining so hard the streets were flooding. Then the sun pops out and hey, the waters dried up.. but atleast its hot all the time. And humid. Extremely humid - we feel constantly sticky.

Later in the evening Omar brought us to a haitian restaurant, yum! (were enjoying this place, no question about it). Then it was party time and its way harder than we thought, 21 it is. At last we turned off from the Avenue Something and went in to a little back alley where we found Buck 15, a chill club with good 80s music. Not just disco, but a great mix. Michael Jackson, Depeche Mode, Donna Summers and all in between. Everyone in the place was wondering how the hell we found the place - since it was usually only visited by locals. We danced all night - great to finally shake it!

And so today: We got up pretty early (considering we got back at 4 last night) and went to Kathleen's to pick up the girls. And then to the Everglades!! We went on a boatride on the "swamp(en)" (svampen in swedish means the mushroom) and stared at some crocodiles! And we got lucky, because only a few days once a year its possible to see baby corocodiles here - and it is just that time of the year now! So cutietiny! Relaxing on the leafs of the water lilys. Afterwards we went for a walk in "Shark Valley", where the crocodiles apparantly walk around freely on the streets. Whatever that has to do with sharks. But either way, the only crocodile we saw (however crazily huge) was just chilling out under the water. Which we should have also been doing, because it was incredibly hot. The crocodiles were clearly smarter than us.

ATLAST we made it back to Miami and South Beach - we went floating around on the waves until the sun set, and now we are back at Omar's place. Earlier today we went grocery-shopping in the most well sorted super market ever and now Omar is cooking a vegetarian dinner for us - and then we are going to make a delicious desert! It feels so good that we chose to couchsurf, super cool to ride around in this guys car, discussing everyday life of America vs Sweden and listen to electro jazz.

The other day we were walking the streets around Miami Beach, when suddenly we saw this gorgeous golden car. Wow! And what else if it wasnt parked outside no less than Miami Ink! Sadly none of the hotties from tv was there, but it was exciting anyway! Perhaps well have to return now and then ,)

Now its time for a visit to the laundry to get our clothes desalted. Like we said, its like being in a dream, about to wake up back home in the bed in Sweden.

We love you and are thinking of you!
Julia & Maja
